Girl Power Stories : Sarita Kumar – Founder of Greenwood Public School

Mrs. Sarita Kumar, Has anyone ever heard about her? No, actually in our male dominated society we often talk about educating girl child, empowering women, but how many people took initiative to bring a change to this society. Those are limited to the lectures, speeches, advertisements, providing discounts on women’s day and to some extent government’s initiatives and measures, but who follows them ? Does those lectures or advertisements help us ?

Even after seventy years of independence women are still deprived from education, financial stability and many other basic necessities , still 68 percent of women living in rural India cannot afford sanitary pads. And, hardly people know about such issues and talk about it.

However there are few Sheroes who are silently working for the society,for the betterment of our education system,for the women and for the country.

Greenwood’s founder Sarita Kumar’s journey started at her early stages of life when she got married in Haryana. And  when she went to her husband’s village, she get to know that the girls and the women are not provided .. rather not allowed to go to school, college or to do anything.

Their parents believe they are destined to marriage. Being an educated women she realized the need for awareness and decided to take initiative and do something for them. At this stage her brother and her husband played an important and vital role. They stood by her side and helped her to achieve her goal.

She came back to Haryana and took loans from various banks to establish a school. It was initially a primary school  “Greenwood Public School”.

For higher secondary education she approached CBSE and she got approval in a go. After getting appreciation and success she founded other branches of Greenwood and provided free education and resources to more than 500 needy students. She also provided sewing machines to almost 600 women and being trained to earn their livelihoods .She became their source of inspiration and they all are grateful to her .

Ministry of Child and Women Welfare considered her work and honored her. After that , Honorable President of our country Pranab Mukherjee invited her. She was among those 100 strongest women and entrepreneurs in India who were felicitated by the President . She was nominated in the field of education.

Later, Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr. Manohar Lal Khattar also awarded for her achievements.

Sarita Kumar’s story is an inspirational and motivational one. Her path of success will be followed by many and this story is an example and initiative for every women out there who believe that individual effort may bring a significant change.
